On September 28, 2018, The New York Times reported that pet food manufacturers were facing a shortage of pet food because of a global food price war.
According to the Times, “The pet food industry’s supply chain has been disrupted by the war and a surge in demand for pet food products.
It is now difficult to get food in stores and at restaurants.”
On August 28, 2019, PetSmart, a major pet food retailer, announced that it would be ending its partnership with PetSmart Pet Food and would no longer carry PetSmart pet food.
PetSmart was the largest supplier of pet foods to pet food retailers in the U.S. at the time.
In 2018, the industry’s food price wars continued.
On January 1, 2019 the FDA issued a new guidance that stated that pet foods containing meat and fish can be adulterated and labeled as such.
On December 1, 2018 the FDA proposed a new regulation that requires pet food suppliers to obtain a license to sell pet food at the grocery store.
The proposed regulation would require pet food companies to disclose to customers the fact that their pet food is being prepared by pet food factories.
On July 22, 2019 it was announced that the FDA would no more require petfood companies to obtain an FDA-certified pet food license, saying that the agency had been too focused on the safety and efficacy of petfoods.
Pet food companies responded to the FDA’s proposal with a statement that said that they had already made all the necessary adjustments to their supply chain to meet the new regulations.
The FDA is expected to release a final rule on pet food manufacturing and labeling on September 18, 2020.
