The pet food had been recalled from stores in Ohio, Minnesota and North Carolina due to the potential for liver damage, according to the company.

The company told NBC News the recall is voluntary and the pet food can be replaced.

Pet food makers have also come under fire in the past for their use of chemicals in products.

In March 2018, for example, Walmart announced it would stop selling the petfood brand DormiPet and its pet food line DorminPet, after reports that the brands contained a chemical that could cause birth defects.
