Pets and pet food: What’s in the pet food aisle?
Pet food makers have been experimenting with ways to save money over the past few years, as the industry has been undergoing a shakeup.
The main culprit has been the rising cost of pet food and pet nutrition, which has fueled an explosion in online pet food sales.
The industry has seen an average price increase of nearly 20% per year for the last five years.
That includes a 6.7% increase in the first quarter of 2017 alone, according to the Pet Food Institute.
In 2018, the average retail price for pet food fell 9.4%.
That’s the first time since 2014 that the average price has dropped in five years, according the PetFood Institute.
The rising costs have made it hard for many pet food makers to stay profitable.
For example, Nestle said last year that it had to cut nearly 1,000 jobs in 2017 because of the rising costs.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been cracking down on the price hikes.
Last year, the agency approved a new rule that requires pet food manufacturers to disclose the costs of pet foods and nutritional supplements and to give consumers a rebate if they buy products from a competitor.
However, it’s not yet clear how effective the new rule will be, according and former FTC commissioner Richard Cordray.
“I don’t think it’s a complete victory for pet owners.
They may have to rethink some of the pricing practices they used to use,” Cordray said.
The agency is also considering more regulations on how pet food is sold and on how it is marketed.
The FDA has yet to release a list of those new regulations.
The cost of purchasing pet foodOnline pet food purchases have been on a steady rise for decades.
But in 2018, that price increase came to an abrupt halt, according a report from The Pet Nutrition Association, a trade group.
Pet food prices were up 10.9% in the second quarter of 2018, which included a 6% increase for pet products.
The Pet Nutrition Act requires pet foods to be sold at prices below the retail price of the food, but the companies have been able to charge more for pet foods by making them higher-end than normal.
That means some pet food prices have risen by more than 20% for some brands.
“It’s not just the retail markup.
It’s the markup in the ingredient list, in the package and in the label,” said Michelle Linnick, president of the Pet Nutrition Alliance.
The trend has caused some companies to cut back on ingredients, leading some consumers to think that pet food may be a bit too expensive.
The problem, according for many consumers, is that some of those ingredients are actually very cheap.
The USDA estimates that the cost of an ingredient in a pet food can range from about $1.50 to $2.00 per serving.
That means many pet foods may not be as nutritious as they claim on their labels.
A recent study from the Consumer Reports Institute found that the ingredient lists of pet feed suppliers varied widely, from “low-fat” to “low sugar” to high-fructose corn syrup.
The study also found that most pet food suppliers had misleading ingredients.
But the cost-conscious pet food industry is not alone.
The industry has also seen a surge in the price of pet-food supplements, such as vitamin B12 supplements, as consumers look to lower their blood sugar.
The Consumer Reports report found that some supplement makers also are selling a range of other expensive ingredients that may not actually be required by the FDA.
The pet food business is a complicated industry, said Michael Smith, an expert on pet food.
“It’s a complex industry, and it’s an expensive industry.
It really is,” Smith said.
The pet food market is not yet profitable, he added.
“This is not a food that is going to go away,” Smith added.
“There are still people who will buy pet food, and there are still some people who won’t.”
But some companies say they are finding that the higher prices are good for consumers, and that pet foods can be better for their pets.
“You’re getting better quality, you’re getting higher-quality ingredients, you have more choices in what you’re putting into your dog’s food, in what your cat’s food is,” said Mike Hagen, owner of Dog Food Network, which sells more than 60 pet food brands.
“That makes a big difference in your pet’s health.”
